Selangor sultan rebuts Idris on Azmin, Amirudin's appointments as MB

Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah has rebutted claims by Ijok assemblyperson Dr Idris Ahmad that Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari and his predecessor Mohamed Azmin Ali were sworn in without the support of Pakatan Harapan.
On the appointment of Amirudin, the Selangor palace said it received a letter on June 7 from PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail which contained the names of three candidates for the post.
In the letter, Wan Azizah was seeking the ruler's assent for any of the candidates deemed qualified to be sworn in as the menteri besar.
"The letter dated June 7 by the PKR president had also indirectly cancelled out earlier letters by the heads of Selangor political parties to His Majesty," the palace said in a statement today.
At a press conference yesterday, Idris had claimed that he had the support of all Harapan leaders in Selangor to become menteri besar, while Amirudin only had the support of his predecessor.
He proffered letters purportedly penned in June expressing this support, from Wan Azizah, state Bersatu chief Abdul Rashid Asari, state Amanah chief Izham Hashim and state DAP chief Tony Pua.
According to the palace, Sultan Sharafuddin appointed Amirudin to the post after receiving Wan Azizah's June 7 letter and having consulted Azmin.
It stressed that the sultan has discretionary powers to appoint a menteri besar as provided for under the state constitution.
Azmin had Harapan support
Idris had also claimed at his press conference yesterday that Azmin installed himself as the menteri besar after the May 9 polls without the support of Harapan leaders.
He said that there were rumours that he was supposed to take up the post instead of Azmin.
The palace denied this, however, stating that prior to Azmin's appointment on May 11, the leaders of PKR, Amanah, Bersatu and DAP had all sent letters to the sultan nominating Azmin as menteri besar.
Azmin's nomination, the palace said, was due to him holding the post before the election, the dedication with which he did carried out his duties, as well as leading Harapan to an even more comprehensive victory in the state.

"As such, it is inaccurate for the Ijok assemblyperson to say that he was nominated to become the menteri besar.
"The Selangor palace always adheres to legal provisions and conventions in any action and does not interfere in political matters," it added. -Mkini
