PETALING JAYA: Outgoing Puteri Umno chief Mas Ermieyati Samsudin has advised the new team leading the party after June 30 to put a stop to ill practices in the party.
She said action should be taken against those with unexplained luxury assets.
Mas said for Umno to remain relevant and inclusive, it should combat corruption and any abuse by party leaders.
“Those who are involved in bribery, abuse of power and with dubious luxury assets should be referred to the disciplinary board. They must declare their assets.
“This will ensure Umno’s image is maintained,” she said in a statement.
The former deputy tourism minister said the party also needed to deal with rejection of membership forms by certain individuals.
Mas said new members were rejected with the excuse that their forms were missing. As such, many youths preferred to stay away from the party.
“Similarly, many are disappointed (including Women and Youth) when they found they were not eligible to be candidates because they have not been members for three years, even though they had submitted their forms much earlier.
“In fact, many new members are surprised that their names are not on the membership roll during recent meetings.”
She said those aged below 35 should automatically be given membership.
She also hoped space would be given to new Puteri members as the number of members has been growing.
“Some of them have never held any big positions in Puteri before and they should be given space to grow through various initiatives and proactive measures.”
On May 26, Mas had announced her decision not to contest any party positions in the coming Umno elections.
Mas, who is MP for Masjid Tanah, said the decision was made to make way for other leaders in Umno.
She hoped former Umno leaders would make way for the new leaders to take charge of the party and its wings.
She said her focus now was to represent her constituency in Parliament. - FMT
