We didn’t pay a sen for Ramadan bazaar lots, say traders

They defend PPBM member Noorhisyam Abd Karim and MP Fong Kui Lun for helping to obtain permits from DBKL.
Trader Mohamad Azman Abdul Rahman suspects another group of traders may have started the controversy.
KUALA LUMPUR: A group of traders, caught in a Ramadan bazaar controversy, have come to the defence of a PPBM Youth member who was earlier alleged to have misused his political connections to secure bazaar lots.
The traders’ representative, Mohamad Azman Abdul Rahman, said it was Bukit Bintang PPBM Youth leader Noorhisyam Abd Karim who helped them get the lots to operate the business in the last few days of the fasting month.
“We did not pay Sam (Noorhisyam) a single sen. The accusations, reported in the media, are false.
“In fact, this is the first time we can operate legally with a city council licence, thanks to Sam and YB (Fong Kui Lun),” he said outside Masjid India today.
Noorhisyam was accused of misusing his political connections to secure 80 lots and renting them out for as high as RM5,000 per lot.
Fong, who is a five-term Bukit Bintang MP, was implicated in the Ramadan bazaar incident when it was alleged that Noorhisyam had used the DAP veteran’s name to obtain support for approval by City Hall (DBKL) for the bazaar trading lots to be set up in the Masjid India area.
Fong lodged a police report today, demanding that police investigate claims of “middlemen” taking money from traders.
PPBM Youth leaders also lodged reports with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) over the claims of abuse of power.
Azman said the accusations against Noorhisyam and Fong were done in bad faith and said it might have been done by another traders’ group.
“I do not know why people wanted to spread rumours against the two men and tarnish their reputation,” he added. -FMT
