Zahid refutes Dr M's claim he sought advice on how to run Umno

Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has denied seeking Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad's advice on how to manage Umno when the pair met in Putrajaya earlier this month.
“I have never asked his advice... My friends and I know how to manage our party,” he told a press conference in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, this afternoon.
However, the Umno presidential candidate declined to elaborate on what was discussed during the closed-door meeting with Mahathir on June 7.
A day after the meeting, Mahathir, who led Umno for more than two decades, claimed that Zahid had sought pointers on how to run the party.
“So I was frank and said Umno had betrayed the Malays. I reminded him that we formed Umno to help the Malays but that Umno had changed and prioritised self-wealth.
“Because of that Umno is now hated. It’ll be hard for Umno to recover. Once seen as noble, now viewed with disgust,” he reportedly said.
Previously, another Umno presidential candidate Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah criticised Zahid for meeting Mahathir.
The party veteran said he would not have done so if he was in Zahid's shoes as acting president.
“Why should I (ask Mahathir)? I head a different party.
"He left the party that he formed with Anwar Ibrahim (referring to when Umno was deregistered). So, why would I go crawling to him?” he added.
Zahid has been carrying out the duties of the Umno president following Najib Abdul Razak's resignation in the wake of BN's defeat in the May 9 general election. -Mkini
