Balakong polls: DAP forced to ditch ex-TV host for councillor

DAP has been forced to scrap its plan to field former Astro AEC broadcast journalist Yunna Tan for the upcoming Balakong by-election.
According to a party source, this is due to strong disagreementfrom the grassroots.
“The grassroots were opposed to Tan on the grounds that she would be a 'parachute' candidate and had only recently joined DAP,” the source told Malaysiakini.
Following this, the source said the candidate selection committee decided to name Subang Jaya councillor Wong Siew Ki as the candidate instead.
The decision was made by the five-member committee last night and party leaders are slated to make an official announcement on this tomorrow afternoon.
Wong, 32, is also the Serdang DAP Youth chief.
She was a tuition teacher after graduating from UPM with a degree in Foreign Languages majoring in Chinese. She had joined DAP in 2014.
She was active in student movements and produced a documentary titled “Jatuh” in 2012 on the death of former DAP aide Teoh Beng Hock in 2009.
In 2013, Wong became the political secretary for Ean Yong Hian Wah, when he was a former Selangor state exco member.
MCA to announce its candidate tomorrow
Meanwhile, MCA would also announce their candidate for the by-election tomorrow.
The announcement would be made by deputy president Wee Ka Siong at a press conference scheduled to be held at the MCA headquarters in Kuala Lumpur.
MCA has decided to use their own logo in the by-election.
The Balakong state seat fell vacant after two-term incumbent Eddie Ng died in an accident on July 20.
Nomination day falls on Aug 18 and polling would be held on Sept 8. - Mkini
