PARLIAMENT | Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Liew Vui Keong tabled a bill to repeal the Anti-Fake News Act 2018 (AFN) in the Dewan Rakyat today.
The bill will be passed at the policy stage in the current parliamentary sitting, which will end on Aug 16.
This was among the controversial bills Pakatan Harapan had pledged to repeal in its manifesto.
The AFN was gazetted on April 11, despite concerns over its vague definitions of what constitutes 'fake news', stiff penalties, and its chilling effect on the media industry.
Civil society has constantly been reminding Harapan of its promise to repeal numerous laws such as Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) and the AFN since the coalition took over Putrajaya in the historic May 9 general election.
Before the election, Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang had suggested a single bill to be drafted to tackle all the laws that needed reviewing.
