KUALA LUMPUR: A witness who testified today in the inquest into Dutch model Ivana Smit’s death last year said he once saw the “party girl” asking Alex Johnson and Luna Almaz, the couple who hosted her on the day she died, to have a threesome with her.
Mohd Shareza Sadek Mohamed @ Adam, 38, the 11th witness to take the stand in the inquest, told the inquest today that Smit also had a history of late night partying and drinking, and did not have a place to stay towards the end of last year.
“Ivana was very flirtatious with the Johnsons when she first met them at the Prime bar in early November last year.
“I was there. I heard her tell the Johnsons, ‘You seem like such a handsome couple. It would be nice to have a threesome with you.’
“She was intoxicated at this point. They both told Ivana that they didn’t take her seriously, but Luna was excited at this, I know. She is bisexual,” Shareza testified at the Kuala Lumpur Coroner’s Court today.
Today is the fifth day of the eight-day inquest into Smit’s death.
Smit was found dead in the afternoon of Dec 7 last year, sprawled in the nude on a sixth-floor condo balcony at CapSquare Residences, off Jalan Dang Wangi, Kuala Lumpur. The Johnsons lived on the 20th floor of the same condo block.
Police had originally classified the case as sudden death, but the case was re-opened after pressure from Smit’s family who claimed that there were elements of foul play and a cover-up.
The inquest is to determine how Smit had died and whether there is enough evidence to take the case to trial.
Adam said he first met Smit at a friend’s birthday party on Oct 31 last year.
While there, he saw Smit crying to a friend about not having any money or a place to stay after her Dutch boyfriend had broken up with her.
He said Ice, the friend Smit was crying to, asked Smit to move in with her that night.
Adam then introduced himself to Smit that night and befriended her.
The next time Adam saw Smit again was at the Prime bar a few weeks later, where he overheard her telling the Johnsons she wanted to have sex with them.
Adam, a party-goer himself, said Ice later complained to him over the phone that Smit was partying until the wee hours of the morning, and suggested that Smit should stay with Adam instead.
“She then stayed with me in my Mont Kiara residence from Nov 10 onwards for four or five nights maximum,” Adam said but added that she moved out on her accord after that and stayed with the Johnsons.
“Ivana asked me to introduce her to any boys for her to date. I said I didn’t know any guys her age, only girls. She then started using Tinder to meet boys.
“Before she left my flat, she bumped into the Johnsons for the second time at the Solaris club after playing pool in another club.
“At around midnight or 1am, Ivana told me that she was going to leave with the Johnsons. I told her, ‘Okay, go ahead and do whatever you want.’ I trusted the Johnsons. I know them.”
Later that morning, at around 3am, Adam left the club but realised he didn’t have his house keys.
He called Alex to ask for the keys that Smit still had with her, but was told not to disturb them as they were having sex.
About 10 minutes later, he got a call from Luna, who asked Adam where they could get cocaine as Smit told her she wanted to use it.
At this point, deputy public prosecutor N Joy Jothi asked for the proceedings to be halted for the day as it was getting late. Coroner Mahyon Talib agreed to this and the inquest ended.
The Johnsons are scheduled to testify in the inquest, but there is still no sign of them. It is unclear whether they will be testifying at all.
They have since left for the US, maintaining their innocence to a UK daily.
The proceedings continue tomorrow, where SN Nair, the lawyer holding a watching brief for the Smit family, will question Adam when he takes the stand again. -FMT
