KUALA LUMPUR: A protest against Attorney-General Tommy Thomas over the decision to drop charges against Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng today saw a heated argument between Umno supporters and police as some 200 people attempted to march from Sogo to the nearby Dang Wangi police headquarters.
Led by Lokman Noor Adam who heads Umno-linked group Pemantau Malaysia Baru, protesters were told to lodge police reports against Thomas.
Lokman, who is part of the Umno Supreme Council, said Thomas had abused his powers and failed in his responsibilities when the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) allowed a representation by Lim’s lawyers to drop corruption charges involving the purchase of a bungalow in Penang when he was the chief minister.
“We believe there had been a dubious transaction (in the bungalow purchase) and we urge the police to investigate to prevent more shocks,” said Lokman, referring to a statement by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission that it was shocked by the AGC’s decision.The AGC had said that Thomas, who was a defence counsel for Lim, was not involved in the decision.
Lokman said he had lodged a police report on the matter.
Lim was charged together with businesswoman Phang Li Koon over a purchase of a bungalow at below-market price from Phang.
Lim was accused of using his position to obtain gratification for himself and his wife by approving an application by Phang’s company Magnificent Emblem to convert agricultural land for residential purposes during a state executive council meeting on July 18, 2014. - FMT
