Foreign vehicles with unsettled traffic summonses will be barred from leaving the country, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
He said the move to bar the vehicles will start when the country implements the Vehicle Entry Permit (VEP) system at its borders starting this year.
"We are looking at multiple approaches to be used. For example, we are implementing the VEP system at the border with Singapore.
"For now, vehicles (entering Malaysia) are only charged RM20. But we are also registering them under VEP, so that when it starts, vehicles with unsettled summonses can't leave the country.
"However, this will take some time to be implemented. But this is the way forward," he told reporters during a visit to Automated Enforcement System (AES) control centre in Kelana Jaya today.
Loke added that the first phase of VEP will start at Malaysia's border with Singapore this year. VEP at borders with Thailand would be implemented in its second stage.
During the visit, Loke was given a tour of the centre which controls all 45 AES cameras nationwide.
The cameras, 19 of which were for enforcement against speeding offences while the rest, for traffic light flouting, are now under the purview of the Road Transport Department.
They were previously operated by two concessionaire companies. - Mkini
