For the first time ever, MACC has released a statement showing a conflict between the commission and the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC), said lawyer Mohd Khairul Azam Abd Aziz.
Mohd Khairul, who lodged a police report at Putrajaya district police headquarters today regarding the matter, urged police to investigate whether there has been an abuse of power on the AGC's side or if MACC carried out a perfunctory investigation into the cases involving Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.
"MACC investigated the case. Now it seems that MACC itself is perplexed. It indicates that MACC performed the investigation, supplied Class-A evidence … yet when the defendant is acquitted, MACC is ‘shocked’.
"The police must investigate why is MACC shocked," he told Malaysiakini outside the police headquarters.
Earlier today, the Penang High Court acquitted Lim of two graft charges over the alleged conversion of state land and the purchase of a bungalow at below market value.
The court also acquitted businessperson Phang Li Koon from the charge of abetting Lim in obtaining the bungalow at an undervalued cost.
The MACC has since said that it is "very shocked" with the charges being dropped and clarified that the decision came from the AGC, and not the commission. - Mkini
