PETALING JAYA: The lawyer representing rights group Suaram in the corruption complaint linked to Malaysia’s purchase of the Scorpene submarines from France said investigations into the deal have hit a snag due to non-cooperation from Hong Kong over a shell company’s bank account.
William Bourdon today said details of bank accounts for Terasasi (Hong Kong) Ltd would have helped investigators in finding out the beneficiaries for the alleged US$130 million in kickbacks from the submarine deal.
“This is the missing part, a black hole in terms of evidence,” he told reporters today.
French authorities had said the company belonged to Abdul Razak Baginda, who was an aide to former prime minister Najib Razak.
Bourdon, who was deported by the Barisan Nasional government in 2011, hoped authorities in Hong Kong would eventually help French investigators.
He told a press conference today that he would also meet the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission, the Attorney-General’s Chambers, and Deputy Defence Minister Liew Chin Tong.
Another lawyer involved in the probe, Apoline Cagnat, said there was evidence to suggest that Mongolian citizen Altantuya Shaariibuu, who was murdered in 2006, was also involved in the Scorpene deal.
She said Altantuya’s role was as a translator in the Scorpene discussions.
“Her role in the discussions have to be clarified, but her name did come up,” Cagnat said. - FMT
