Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin has welcomed Johor ruler Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar's olive branch to the federal government.
However, the home minister said for the strained ties to heal, the monarch must also admit to having caused unease.
"The sultan must agree that he has done certain things which have created uneasiness.
"Intervening in the affairs of running the state, that, too, has to be stopped.
"Not that the sultan cannot intervene, he can at times, but disturbing the administration of the state must be stopped," he told reporters in Petaling Jaya today.
The former Johor menteri besar said he had conveyed this to Sultan Ibrahim during his recent audience with the latter.
Sultan Ibrahim earlier today called for dialogue with the federal government in order to settle their differences.
This is after Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad yesterday said the Johor and Terengganu constitutions were nullified when Malaya was formed.
Muhyiddin said differences of opinion on the Johor state constitution were among the issues that must be settled.
"I told the sultan that ties between the federal government, state and the palace must be improved.
"People know there is a problem now, so it is not nice for this to drag on. (But) when there is a decision (following the talks), it must be respected [...] it must be followed," he said.
Muhyiddin suggested that Johor Menteri Besar Sahrudin Jamal make the first move by going to the Johor palace to lay the groundwork for a meeting with the federal government.
Ties between Mahathir and the Johor palace became further strained after disagreements over who decided on the appointment of the menteri besar and members of the state executive council.
Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar insisted that the Johor constitution gave him authority over such matters.
The prime minister, however, said the power was vested with the political parties that won an election. - Mkini
