KUCHING: The Congress of Unions of Employees in the Public and Civil Services (Cuepacs) today urged the federal government to consider revisions to the regional and housing allowance for government officers in Budget 2020.
Its second deputy president Zainal Ismail said Cuepacs had received complaints from its Sarawak branch that the regional and housing allowance received by Sarawakian government officers who work in other states are not commensurate with their salaries.
He said many government officers who earn higher salaries receive a lower amount of regional and housing allowance.
“This issue must be taken seriously, especially with the current high cost of living,” he said at the Sarawak police-civilian staff assembly with the state police commissioner here.
He said many government officers are stressed, especially when their welfare is not taken into account by the federal government.
“We must understand that it’s not easy for them to leave their family members behind for work, not to mention that most of them are based in further parts of the states throughout Malaysia.
“It is understandable that the federal government is currently facing financial constraints, but who else would they turn to?”
Zainal also urged the federal government to upgrade dilapidated government quarters, facilities and transportation services.
He said Cuepacs had recently visited several police contingent headquarters, district police headquarters and prisons, particularly in the rural areas. Most of them were found to be in rundown condition, he said.
“The tables and chairs at the offices and government quarters were all in bad condition.
“Some of the government quarters don’t even have toilet doors, and they only have one or two rooms with limited space.”
He said yesterday’s incident which saw an ambulance driver and a patient killed when the vehicle skidded on the North-South Highway near Slim River showed a lack of maintenance of government assets.
“We urge the federal government to look into this matter seriously, and upgrade as well as maintain all its assets,” he said. - FMT
