KU NAN THE FIRST OF NAJIB’S CORRUPT REGIME TO BE JAILED? EX-MINISTER SLAPPED WITH RM57 MILLION TAX BILL – EVEN AS PROSECUTION WRAPS UP BRIBERY CASE

THE government, via the Inland Revenue Board (IRB), has filed a suit against former Federal Territories minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor seeking RM57.17 million in income tax arrears for the 2012-2017 period.
The government, as the plaintiff, filed a writ of summons and statement of claim through IRB at the Kuala Lumpur High Court on July 24, naming Tengku Adnan as the defendant.
Putrajaya said the former Umno secretary-general still owes income tax for the 2012-2017 assessment years, as stated in a notice of assessment dated March 15 this year.
It said the notice was sent to the defendant’s last known address via AR-registered post on March 20, and received and signed two days later.
The defendant also failed to pay the amount inclusive of the 10% increase within 60 days, as stipulated under Section 103, said the government. Therefore, the amount was raised a further 5%.
The plaintiff said to date, Tengku Adnan has not settled the total sum of RM57,167,069.35.
The annual tax amounts are RM64,444.38 for 2012, RM6,614,861.59 (2013), RM8,887,576.69 (2014), RM9,198,523.67 (2015), RM5,520,818.05 (2016) and RM26,880,844.97 (2017).
Accordingly, the government is seeking RM57,167,069.35 from the defendant, with an interest rate of 5% per annum from the date of judgment to the date of realisation, as well as costs and other relief deemed fit by the court.
Case management has been set for Thursday before deputy high court registrar Farah Shuhada Ramli.
Tengku Adnan faces two corruption charges at the high court for allegedly receiving RM2 million and RM1 million in bribes. One trial is ongoing, and the other is set to begin on September 3.
On June 25, the government, via IRB, filed a suit against former prime minister Najib Razak, seeking the payment of RM1.69 billion in income tax owed between 2011 and 2017.

Prosecution rests case in Tengku Adnan graft trial

AFTER 12 days of trial with 23 witnesses called to testify, the prosecution today rested its case against former federal territories minister Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor, who allegedly received RM2 million in bribes from businessman Chai Kin Kong.
Deputy public prosecutor Julia Ibrahim said this after Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) enforcement officer Muhamad Saad Bordani, 37, finished his testimony at the Kuala Lumpur High Court today.
Julia said the prosecution also offered several witnesses from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and MACC to the defence if the accused was called to enter his defence.
Judge Mohamed Zaini Mazlan set October 4 and 11 for oral submissions.
Tengku Adnan’s trial began on July 2, with 23 prosecution witnesses including former Kuala Lumpur mayors Ahmad Phesal Talib and Mohd Amin Nordin Abd Aziz and Chai, who is the managing director of Syarikat Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd.
On January 23, Tengku Adnan, 68, pleaded not guilty in front of judge Mohamed Zaini during the first mention of the case after it was allowed to be transferred from the Sessions Court to the high court on December 14, 2018.
Tengku Adnan was charged in his capacity as a public servant, namely, federal territories minister, to have accepted for himself RM2 million from Chai via a Hong Leong Islamic Bank cheque belonging to Aset Kayamas Sdn Bhd, which was deposited into the CIMB Bank account of Tadmansori Holdings Sdn Bhd in which he had an interest, when it was known that Aset Kayamas had connection with his official duties.
The offence was allegedly committed at CIMB Bank Bhd, Pusat Bandar Damansara Branch here on June 14, 2016.
The charge was framed under Section 165 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to two years or fine or both, on conviction. – Bernama
