Muhyiddin: Gov't to provide skills training for trafficked victims

Putrajaya will provide elementary skill training and certificates for trafficked victims in the country this year, announced Home Minister Muhyiddin Yassin (above, right).
This is part of Putrajaya's effort in improving the lives of the trafficked victims here, he told a national conference on human trafficking at Kuala Lumpur today.
Beside this, he said, regulations were gazetted to allow the victims, who are protected in their shelter homes, to move freely and work in Malaysia.
"The government also provides a monthly subsistence allowance to trafficked victims," he said.
Malaysia has come a long way in combatting the crime of trafficking in persons, he said.
"We have seen the reduction of human trafficking victims in Malaysia over the years (after all these efforts put in to combat human trafficking)," he said.
"The Anti-Trafficking in Persons and Anti-Smuggling of Migrants Council (MAPO) has recorded a total of 543 human trafficking victims placed at shelters in the first half of 2019, as compared to 1,474 victims throughout 2018 and 2,945 in 2017," he said.
Despite the improvement, he said the government will continue to put more focus on enforcement, prosecution, prevention and protection of trafficked victims.
