The Selangor ruler is reviewing a bill that would allow unilateral conversions in the state, said Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
Speaking to reporters in Shah Alam this morning, Amirudin said that whether the enactment will be tabled or not would only be made after a decision has been reached.
"We will make sure that this matter is discussed thoroughly. Because some of the issues are related to the interpretation of the Federal Constitution. So, we have to refer back (to the constitution).
"At the moment, the Selangor sultan is also reviewing the paper.
"I would have to refer to him (about the matter) after consultation with all parties and leaders in Selangor, as well as at the federal level," he said during the Hari Raya Aidiladha open house at the menteri besar's official residence.
Amirudin was commenting on the plan to table the Islamic Administration Enactment bill during last week's state assembly sitting, which was reportedly stalled by speaker Ng Suee Lim (photo) cutting short the session.
Ng, however, denied cutting the sitting down to just two days to prevent the amendment from being tabled.
Asked why the matter was only brought up now instead of during previous state administrations, Amirudin said there were such plans before.
"There had been deliberation (on the matter), it was supposed to be brought up in previous years.
"This is up to the wisdom of the religious authorities. They are the ones who planned it.
"So we are looking at the matter, everybody (stakeholders in the bill) is. When a decision is reached, then only we will think of the next step." - Mkini
