We're waiting for Lynas to propose waste disposal method, PM says

Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said today that Putrajaya is waiting for Australia's Lynas Corp to make a proposal on how it will deal with its low-level radioactive waste.
“We are giving this condition to Lynas – that they should have a plan for dealing with the waste.
“We are waiting for them to tell us how they are going to do that, whether they find a place where they can deposit the waste or not,” Mahathir told reporters at a press conference in Putrajaya.
On July 25, Lynas said it was confident that the licence to run its US$800 million (RM3.29 billion) rare earths processing plant in Gebeng would be renewed before the Sept 2 deadline.
For nearly eight months, the company has been locked in a dispute with Putrajaya over the removal of its waste.
Lynas has submitted all documents necessary for the renewal of its operating licence.
According to Lynas Malaysia managing director Mashal Ahmad, an Atomic Energy Licensing Board audit on the company several months ago was "very satisfactory."
In December, the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry set several conditions for Lynas to clear its waste stockpiles before the renewal of its licence. - Mkini
