Four nabbed in connection with Sungai Selangor pollution

Two directors of a road construction company were among four individuals arrested in connection to the latest pollution in Sungai Selangor which resulted in water disruption to over one million households yesterday.

Selangor Criminal Investigation Department chief Fadzil Ahmat said the four were arrested over their alleged involvement in dumping chemical waste into the sewage manhole of their company premises in Rawang.

"Based on a report lodged on the latest river pollution, the police carried out the arrest from last night to early morning today. The arrests were made in Gombak, Damansara and Kelana Jaya," he said in a statement today.

The two company directors are a 40-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man while the other two, both men, include a Bangladeshi national.

"It is believed that there were activities of discharging chemical residue into the sewage manhole of the premises which flowed into the polluted area," Fadzil said.

The police will apply for a remand order on the four suspects at Selayang Court today, he added.

The police later secured a seven-day remand order for the four individuals at the Magistrate's Court in Selayang.

The latest river pollution incident has impacted over 1.14 million users in 1,279 areas across the Klang Valley from 6pm yesterday. The four water treatment plants affected are expected to resume operations by 2.40pm today.

The police are probing the river pollution under Section 430 of Penal Code following a report lodged by the Selangor Water Management Board (Luas) yesterday.

Section 430 of Penal Code deals with mischief offence which can cause a diminution of water supply for agriculture purpose, for the consumption of human beings or animals, or for carrying out any manufacturing activities.

Luas was forced to shut down four water treatment plants yesterday after solvents were detected in Sungai Selangor at noon yesterday, and a threshold odour number of 8 TON was recorded.

Selangor executive councillor Hee Loy Sian initially alleged that the pollution originated from an Indah Water sewage plant in Taman Velox, Rawang.

Hee, who heads the environment, green technology, science and technology and innovation and consumer affairs portfolio, said he suspected sabotage could have occurred in the incident.

Indah Water CEO Narendran Maniam then denied claims that effluence from one of its sewage plants was responsible and linked the pollution to illegal waste dumping by irresponsible parties. - Mkini
