PM's commitment to negotiate on Sabah oil and gas is 'significant step' - state Bersatu

Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin’s commitment to start negotiations on oil and gas in Sabah is a significant step, said Sabah Bersatu information chief Khairul Firdaus Akbar.

“Bersatu Sabah is confident, and we believe that the prime minister’s statement is not just rhetoric but a significant move in the context of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) itself.

“No matter what is decided in the negotiations later, it will surely have a large-scale positive impact in uplifting the oil and gas industry in Sabah,” Khairul said in a statement today.

He said the boost in that industry would also have a spillover effect and other aspects of the economy in Sabah would benefit as well.

Khairul said he is also impressed how Sabah Chief Minister Hajiji Noor, who is also the Sabah Bersatu chief, had fought for this issue in presenting this motion in the party’s third annual general meeting (AGM).

Muhyiddin said in his address during the AGM yesterday that he would look into this matter as soon as possible for the sake of Sabahans as well as a sign of gratitude for their support for Perikatan Nasional in the recent state election.

“With this promise, it clearly shows the close relationship between the state government under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and the federal government.

“With such a situation, surely it is possible to create a good environment for the sake of Sabah’s development,” Khairul said. - Mkini
