Jakoa ready to support Orang Asli students resume classes - DG

The Orang Asli Development Department (Jakoa) is in discussions with the Education Ministry to determine the best teaching and learning methods for the community in the interiors of Kelantan.

Its director-general Juli Edo said the matter was being looked into, adding that for the time being - with the movement control order still in force - affected Orang Asli students have yet to resume their schooling session.

"Among the ideas include teaching to be conducted by preparing printed materials for the students.

"Jakoa is prepared to offer support, including delivering the materials and to observe," Juli told Malaysiakini when contacted today.

As the number of Covid-19 infections is yet to be under control, the Education Ministry previously announced that only major examination candidates will be allowed to return to school for face-to-face learning.

Meanwhile, the rest of the students have resumed their home-based online classes since Jan 20, which poses a big challenge for those living in the interiors or from low-income families.

Students from areas with limited or no Internet access were among the most disadvantaged, such as those in Orang Asli villages around Gua Musang, Kelantan, who have almost no such access.

Juli said Jakoa as a supporting agency would give its full cooperation to any decisions taken.

In the meantime, he said Jakoa was also in talks with the Gua Musang district education department to find a temporary solution.

"We will wait for the decision to be taken and Jakoa will provide logistic assistance," he said. - Mkini
