PETALING JAYA: The nation’s inflation is at its highest since 2018, driven primarily by increase in petrol prices, official data showed today.
The Consumer Price Index rate rose to 4.7% in April, compared with the same month of the preceding year, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said.
“And the trend is expected to continue until the first quarter of 2022,” chief statistician Mohd Uzir Mahidin said in a statement.
The increase in the overall index was driven by the increase in the index of transport (27.0%) due to the low base effect from the preceding year, he said.
Uzir said the average price of RON95 in April increased 61.4% to RM2.05 per litre compared with RM1.27, while the price of RON97 increased 62.4% to RM2.55 per litre compared with RM1.57.
Diesel increased 44.3% to RM2.15 per litre from RM1.49.
He said housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels rose by 3.1% compared with the same month last year.
Uzir said the index of food and non- alcoholic beverages increased 1.9% over the same month of the previous year.
“This is due to shortage in supply, higher demand and uncertainty in weather.”
He said that even though the overall index increased, the core index, which excludes most volatile items of fresh food as well as administered prices of goods and services, rose 0.7% in April as compared with the same month last year.
The CPI without fuel increased 1.7% in April to 113.8 from 111.9 in the corresponding period. The CPI without fuel covers all goods and services except RON95, RON97 and diesel.
Uzir also said six states surpassed the national CPI rate of 4.7% in April – Terengganu (6.3%), Kelantan (5.7%), Pahang (5.6%), Kedah and Perlis (5.1%), Negeri Sembilan (5.0%) and Johor (4.9%). - FMT
