MIC president denies involvement in assault shown in viral video

MIC president SA Vigneswaran has lodged a police report after a video depicting a man being beaten by unknown assailants went viral.

In the video, the victim is assaulted and scolded for purportedly having insulted Vigneswaran and MIC deputy president M Saravanan. Vigneswaran (above) said the victim, who is known to him, had actually apologised to him a few days ago.

The MIC president emphatically denied any knowledge of the assailants and any connection to himself, Saravanan, or the MIC and urged the police to investigate the matter fully.

In the report filed last night and seen by Malaysiakini, Vigneswaran said that at 5.32pm yesterday he received a viral video via WhatsApp in which a man of Indian ethnicity was seen being beaten by unidentified assailants.

"My name and that of MIC deputy president M Saravanan were mentioned by the assailants while beating the victim. They questioned why he had insulted us in an audio clip four days ago.

"I would like it to be known that the victim is known to me and that he had already apologised to both Saravanan and myself.

"Because he was beaten while the names of Saravanan and myself were being uttered, this creates the false impression that he was beaten on our instructions.

"I deny any knowledge of the assailants and any connection to myself, Saravanan, or the party. We urge the police to investigate the assault fully so that justice may be served," Vigneswaran said in his report.

The report was lodged at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters in the capital.

Acting Criminal Investigation Department (CID) director Dev Kumar, when contacted, confirmed that police have received the report.

"The incident happened in Cameron Highlands. Please check with the Pahang police contingent," he said when contacted last night.

Pahang CID chief Othman Nanyan, when contacted, said he will issue a press statement on the case soon.

"I will issue an official statement via the state police media group.

"We are still investigating. Please give us some time," he said. - Mkini
