KUALA LUMPUR: Selangor police have cautioned the public against deliberately lodging false reports of loss of their MyKad to cover their carelessness and escape from the penalty imposed.
Selangor police chief Datuk Arjunaidi Mohamed said there had been a rise in MyKad related false reports from Jan to April this year, whereby 108 cases had been investigated.
He said the figure this year was higher compared to only the 60 cases investigated last year.
Of the combined statistics, a total of 86 cases were successfully charged in court while 82 more are still under probe, he said.
"Our investigations showed that the main cause of the false police reports was due to the fine that would be imposed on each loss of the MyKad if it was due to negligence.
"However, a fine is exempted if it is a criminal case such as if it was stolen, snatch theft or robbery.
"There are people who came forward to make a fake police report just to avoid being fined.
"They attribute their loss to falling victim to theft, robbery or snatch theft," Arjunaidi said in a statement today.
He advised members of the public to refrain from making false reports as it would be found out, anyway.
"The authenticity or truth of a police report will be known after thorough investigations are conducted. From there, we will know whether the report is genuine or simply made up," said Arjunaidi.
He said anyone found to have made a false police report will be investigated under Section 182 of the Penal Code.
The offence carries an imprisonment of up to six months or a fine of up to RM2,000, if found guilty. - NST
