Deputy speaker needs time to decide on sanctioning Tajuddin

PARLIAMENT | Deputy speaker Rashid Hasnon said he will determine tomorrow at the latest if it is necessary to penalise Tajuddin Abdul Rahman (BN-Pasir Salak) over certain remarks made in the Dewan Rakyat last week.

The deputy speaker confirmed he received Kasthuri Patto’s (Pakatan Harapan-Batu Kawan) letter demanding swift action to be taken against Tajuddin for his allegedly sexist behaviour.

“I received the letter and the Dewan Rakyat speaker (Azhar Azizan Harun) has asked for me to handle it. It is in the process.

“I have arranged to meet with several witnesses and will give my decision this week, tomorrow at the latest,” he said.

Rashid (above) said this in response to pleas by opposition lawmakers urging disciplinary action on Tajuddin for allegedly saying “p*****k” - a Malay swear word - in the Lower House last Wednesday (July 20).

Kasthuri was one of several opposition MPs who felt Tajuddin used an inappropriate remark in the Lower House.

She said in the Dewan Rakyat today she was disheartened by the deputy speaker's decision last week to only send out a warning against Tajuddin.

This, she said, in spite of the Pasir Salak MP's violation of Standing Order 36(4) of the Dewan Rakyat through his alleged use of offensive language and sexist remarks.

According to Kasthuri, Tajuddin has had a history of getting himself into situations such as these, labelling him a “repeat offender”.

Further, she alleged there were nine witnesses who overheard the Umno man use the curse word after his microphone was switched off.

“If the speaker doesn’t take stern action against foul-mouthed MPs, this will serve as a dangerous precedent,” she said.

Kasthuri added that Tajuddin should at the very least apologise and retract his statement.

This was not the Pasir Salak MP's first time triggering backlash over sexist remarks in Parliament.

In 2016, he infamously remarked that Teresa Kok (Harapan-Seputeh) was the only woman with a “Kok”.

Tajuddin never apologised for that incident, insisting he was just referring to her name. - Mkini
