PETALING JAYA: Terengganu Bersatu has welcomed Barisan Nasional’s decision to name former menteri besar Ahmad Said as its “poster boy” for the next state election, saying the move will actually benefit them.
Terengganu Bersatu chief Razali Idris said Ahmad, the Kijal assemblyman, had many failures during his time in power and this was something they would use to their advantage.
“We have no problems taking on Umno-BN and with them naming Ahmad as their poster boy. It gives us an advantage. There are many issues we can raise,” Razali told FMT.
He said BN would face a tough time trying to wrest the state from PAS should a state election be held simultaneously with the general election (GE15).
“I doubt they can win and wrest control of Terengganu,” he said.
Razali was surprised that BN was willing to put forward a “recycled” candidate in Ahmad, who quit the party in 2014 only to retract his resignation soon after.
“Umno-BN lost in two-thirds of the seats in Terengganu. They should be putting forward new faces but, strangely, they are relying on the old guard. Now, young people want new blood.
“In Umno, there are many new faces who can become the poster boy and menteri besar, who can bring change if given the chance.”
Previously, FMT reported that Terengganu BN was putting forward Ahmad as its “poster boy” as part of its effort to wrest control of the state.
State Umno secretary Rozi Mamat said Ahmad would be appointed as menteri besar should BN return to power.
On seat allocations for Bersatu and PAS under the Perikatan Nasional banner, Razali said he did not foresee any problems especially since BN had rejected cooperation with Bersatu. - FMT
