GE15: Syahredzan to replace Kian Ming in Bangi?

With incumbent Bangi MP Ong Kian Ming not defending his seat in the upcoming general election, it has been speculated that DAP may field a younger and fresh candidate to retain the constituency.

One name that has been touted was Syahredzan Johan, a 39-year-old lawyer who is also the political secretary to DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang.

The speculation was fuelled even more when Ong tweeted last week hinting that their election machinery team is ready to support Syahredzan (above, right).

“Team P102 Bangi is ready for GE15!” he said, tagging Twitter account @syahredzanTEAM and Syahredzan’s personal account.

Ong repeated a similar tweet on Monday, attached with a photo of him and Syahredzan together with the Bangi Pakatan Harapan election team.

The Twitter account @syahredzanTEAM also featured photos and information on the politician's daily activities meeting the public in areas within the Bangi constituency.

Ong was also seen accompanying Syahredzan in some of the activities.

When asked to comment on the speculation, Syahredzan played coy and said that it was up to DAP's top leadership to announce election candidates.

“Candidates who will represent DAP will be determined by the committee of the party. The party will announce it later and we should wait for that,” he said in a text message.

Asked if he was prepared to take on the challenge, Syahredzan replied: “Our grassroots in Bangi is ready for the election.”

Former MCA seat

The Bangi constituency was created just before the 14th general election, in which Ong won after receiving 102,557 votes, defeating opponents from PAS, MCA, and PRM with a majority of 68,768.

Preceding Bangi was the parliamentary constituency of Serdang, which was held by MCA since its creation in 1995 for three terms until its then incumbent, Yap Pian Hon, was defeated by DAP’s Teo Nie Ching in the 12th general election in 2008, receiving 47,444 votes to win with a 21,025 majority.

Teo then contested the Kulai seat in Johor during the 13th general election in 2013 while Ong took over Serdang, successfully retaining the seat for DAP by receiving 79,238 votes and doubling the winning margin to 42,206.

However, on May 9 this year, Ong dropped a bombshell when he announced his decision to take a break from politics and not offer himself as a candidate for GE15. - Mkini
