Ministry never barred teachers from voicing concerns, says Radzi

Teachers are free to put forward their views, says caretaker education minister Radzi Jidin.

SHAH ALAM: Caretaker education minister Radzi Jidin said his ministry has never stopped teachers from voicing their concerns over the education system.

Radzi said the ministry welcomes all feedback from stakeholders.

“In whatever engagements I’ve had with educators, I have never closed the door for them to put forward their views,” he told a press conference here today.

This comes in the wake of primary school teacher Fadli Salleh facing disciplinary action after airing his concerns on the mathematics syllabus, saying it is too advanced for pupils.

Fadli, a teacher at SK (1) Gombak, complained on Facebook that there is not enough time to cover the entire syllabus.

He also highlighted the issue of children having to carry heavy schoolbags as this is harmful to them.

Caretaker Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said on Sunday he hoped a win-win solution could be found for Fadli’s case.

The disciplinary committee investigating Fadli met yesterday, chaired by the education ministry’s secretary-general, Yusran Shah Mohd Yusof.

Asked about Fadli’s fate, Radzi said he trusts the committee will make a “professional decision” based on their assessment.

He said the committee’s decision will be communicated to Fadli today.

Radzi explained that the primary school syllabus has been in use since 2017 and will complete its full cycle this year. Thus, it is currently undergoing review by the ministry for improvement.

“It’s not a syllabus that was developed recently. It’s not a ‘Radzi Jidin’ syllabus,” he said.

He said the concerns raised by Fadli are long-standing issues and the ministry is consistently listening to stakeholders, studying the issues, and finding solutions.

He also said it was expected for the education system to be “politicised” so close to a general election.

“That shouldn’t be the way we deal with the education system,” he said.

Yesterday, Radzi, in a Facebook post, expressed his willingness to meet the teacher. Fadli also stated on his social media account that he would meet Radzi. - FMT
