PSM slams cops after party chief Jeyakumar summoned over forum

PSM chairman Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj will give a statement to police over his participation in the ‘Dark Forces Towards GE15’ forum.

PETALING JAYA: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) has hit out at Bukit Aman for summoning its chairman, Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj, over an investigation into a recent forum featuring former attorney-general Tommy Thomas.

PSM deputy chairman S Arutchelvan said Thomas and the other speakers at the forum were entitled to their opinions.

He said summoning those who spoke at a public forum goes against the spirit of free speech and freedom of expression enshrined in the constitution.

“The police action is yet another waste of public funds,” Arutchelvan said in a statement.

“They should instead spend our tax money on better things for the benefit of the people and not entangle themselves in the political vendetta of certain quarters.”

Yesterday, Bukit Aman’s D5 classified criminal investigation unit summoned Jeyakumar in relation to an investigation into a statement made by Thomas at the “Dark Forces Towards GE15” forum held on Sept 17.

Jeyakumar, who also spoke at the forum, is expected to provide a statement on Oct 20 at the Ipoh district police headquarters.

Police are investigating Thomas’ remarks after he suggested that the opposition tell the public a “Malay government” had failed. He urged the opposition to get voters to ask themselves whether a “Malay government” had made the country better and more efficient.

The other panellists at the forum were human rights lawyer and activist Siti Kasim, DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang and Gerak Independent co-founder Tawfik Ismail. - FMT
