RANAU: Unexpected weather changes caused a group of climbers to be stranded on Mount Kinabalu recently.

Sabah Parks director Dr Maklarin Lakim said the climbers were later brought down safely.

On the day of the incident, the climbing activity started as usual at 2.30am with good weather.

"However, the weather conditions started to change at 6am when heavy rain and strong winds occurred suddenly.

"The climbers, who were accompanied by mountain guides, were brought down through a stream as shown in a viral video. All the climbers managed to descend safely," he said in a statement today.

Dr Maklarin said the video was recorded on Oct 14, adding that incidents of torrential rain often occurred on Mount Kinabalu.

"For the safety of climbers, the mountain summit will be closed in case of heavy rain or bad weather in accordance with the standard operating procedure for climbing Mount Kinabalu," he said.

Dr Maklarin said inquiries can be made directly with Sabah Parks Corporate Communications staff at 088-523531/572 or email to hello@sabahparks.org.my.
