Fahmi cries slander after ex-DAP rep's LGBT identity becomes issue

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil has dismissed as slander an online attempt to use a former DAP assemblyperson's LGBT identity as campaign fodder.

"This is slander and ill-intentioned. (DAP secretary-general) Anthony Loke has clarified that the individual is no longer a Penang assemblyperson (a one-term representative in 2013), and left Malaysia in 2018 to settle down in the US," he tweeted.

Fahmi (above) was responding to a Twitter user who had shared what appeared to be screenshots of a Facebook post, allegedly by the former assemblyperson.

In the Facebook post, which is not accessible to the public, she allegedly announced her proposal to her girlfriend in Penang last month.

Malaysiakini is withholding her name pending her response.

The Twitter user, who shared the screenshots, also included a picture where she is named as a DAP assemblyperson, without indicating that she no longer holds that post.

He said this was evidence that the DAP does not uphold the Federal Constitution or the Rukunegara, one of which pillar is "courtesy and morality" (kesopanan dan kesusilaan). He has since deleted his tweet.

In his reply, Fahmi also attached a screenshot of a WhatsApp conversation between Loke and cabinet ministers, in which Loke warned that the issue will be played up by PN.

The transport minister then clarified that the person was indeed a one-term Penang representative in 2013, who did not contest in 2018 and moved to the US the same year.

However, Fahmi later deleted the tweet containing the screenshot. - Mkini
