Zahid: Decisions to skip elections not a form of boycott

BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today said MCA and MIC's decisions to stay out of the upcoming six state elections is unlikely to be a form of boycott.

Zahid (above) said he will also request explanations from both parties at the next BN supreme council meeting on July 10, which would also coordinate BN's preparations.

"I respect the stands taken by the two parties' leadership. The BN supreme council will meet on July 10 to get their views," said the Umno president.

"I don't think it (staying out) was a form of boycott. (MCA president) Wee Ka Siong contacted me and said MCA is committed to assisting BN's machinery in all six states," he said during a press conference in Putrajaya today.

Both MCA and MIC after separate meetings yesterday announced the parties' decisions to stay out of the six state elections.

The decisions were announced by MCA secretary-general Chong Sin Woon and MIC secretary-general RT Rajasekaran in separate statements.

Commenting further, Zahid said BN had already allocated seats for MCA and MIC.

"We (BN) have finalised all seats, and like I said, there are seats for MCA and MIC," said the deputy prime minister.

The BN's decisions came following initial speculations that MCA and MIC were being sidelined in the seat negotiations between Harapan and BN as first-time allies. - Mkini
