PETALING JAYA: Caretaker Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari has attributed Azmin Ali’s victory in Hulu Kelang to the low voter turnout in the state yesterday.
“Part of his (Azmin’s) victory was because of the voter turnout,” Amirudin told a press conference in Klang.
“A majority of just over 1,000 (votes) is not that significant for a (Perikatan Nasional state) chairman who wanted to form the Selangor government if PN won,” he said, referring to the difference in votes garnered between Azmin and Pakatan Harapan candidate Juwairiya Zulkifli.
Azmin bagged 25,597 votes while Juwairiya obtained 23,980, making up a difference of only 1,617.
The Election Commission recorded a 72% voter turnout rate for Selangor.
Amirudin said the main priority for PH and Barisan Nasional now is to form the state government.
“We will implement all the (items in the manifesto) that we presented,” he said.
Asked to comment on PH’s loss in Gombak Setia, Taman Medan and Sungai Kandis by narrow margins, Amirudin said the combined majorities for the seats are fewer than 300 votes.
“Our lawyers will look into it,” he said, adding that he had been told that there were claims of missing ballot papers, although he did not specify which seats were involved. - FMT
