Harapan candidate hopes for provocation-free campaign

Pakatan Harapan’s candidate for the Simpang Jeram state seat, Nazri Abdul Rahman, hopes there will not be any provocation from his electoral opponents during the campaign period.

“God willing, the nomination went well and the weather was good. Hopefully, the weather will be fine on polling day too.

“I also hope for a peaceful election process as my opponents are also my friends.

“I hope the election will proceed in harmony, and without any provocation, towards a possible victory,” Nazri, who is an engineer, told reporters after submitting his nomination papers in Muar this morning.

There will be a three-way clash for the Simpang Jeram state seat, between Nazri, Perikatan Nasional candidate Dr Mazri Yahya, and independent S Jeganathan.

Meanwhile, Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi reminded all contesting parties to campaign prudently.

“As the menteri besar, I also ask for all parties to campaign in a manner where the harmony of Johoreans can be preserved.

“Don’t get carried away by the way friends from other states campaign in the next two weeks.

“Johor has its own way. Johoreans know what I’m talking about.”

Onn Hafiz also vouched for Nazri, Amanah’s Bakri deputy chief, calling him a well-known professional in the Simpang Jeram constituency.

The Simpang Jeram and Pulai by-elections are being called due to the unexpected vacancy of the two seats following the death of domestic trade and cost of living minister Salahuddin Ayub on July 23, a day after undergoing surgery for a brain haemorrhage.

In the 15th general election, Salahuddin won the Pulai parliamentary seat with a majority of 33,174 votes, polling 64,900 votes, ahead of BN candidate Nur Jazlan Mohamed (31,726 votes) and PN candidate Loh Kah Yong (20,677).

Salahuddin also defended his Simpang Jeram seat in the Johor state election in March last year by polling 8,749 votes against PN’s Zarul Salleh (6,350 votes), BN’s Lokman Md Don (6,062) and Pejuang’s Mahaizal Mahmor (208).

Based on Election Commission statistics, there are 166,653 registered voters in Pulai, who are made up of: 165,799 ordinary voters, 927 police personnel and spouses, and 26 overseas postal voters.

The Simpang Jeram state constituency has 40,379 registered voters, which are 40,373 ordinary voters and six overseas postal voters. - Mkini
