PETALING JAYA: The minimum wage of RM1,500 will be maintained when the progressive wage system is introduced by the government next year, says human resources minister V Sivakumar.

He said the progressive wage system would be practised in tandem with the minimum wage and increase the productivity of workers so as to benefit employers as well, Bernama reported.

“The minimum wage of RM1,500 is the baseline,” he said in Kuching after a meeting with labour officials and employers, unions and training providers.

The progressive wage system will provide for gradual and phased wage increases to keep pace with economic growth. On Thursday, economy minister Rafizi Ramli said the system is expected to be implemented in April or May.

Sivakumar said the National Economic Action Council had stipulated that the progressive wage system was not mandatory for all private employers.

“We want skilled and talented workers to be paid commensurately immediately, becoming an added value and asset to their employer to stay employed. In time to come, employers will gradually realise the need to implement progressive wages.

“So, for the initial stage, we will let employers decide whether they want to use the progressive wage system or not,” he said.

Sivakumar also said that his ministry would look into a proposal for legislation to require salary scales to be stated in job advertisements. “The proposal is good for the people and what is good for the people, we are ready to consider. We will discuss the details of this matter,” he said.

The proposal had been raised by Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman who said job seekers would be able to evaluate jobs based on the best salary offer. - FMT
