Nazri: I hope when voters see me, they remember Salahuddin

JOHOR BY-ELECTIONS | Nazri Abdul Rahman, the Pakatan Harapan candidate for the Simpang Jeram by-elections, is hopeful that this involvement in the area will remind the people and voters of the late Salahuddin Ayub.

Nazri told reporters today that he would continue Salahuddin’s legacy of the Payung Rahmah initiative if elected to represent the people in the Simpang Jeram state constituency.

“I saw the commitment of the voters, especially in the Simpang Jeram constituency, was very encouraging.

“I hope that when the voters see me, they see the late Salahuddin Ayub. Insya-Allah, I will continue Rahmah's initiative and I will also continue my activities as the people’s representative,” he said after attending a Jalur Gemilang event in Muar, today.

Commenting on the progress of the third day of the campaign, Nazri (above) extended his appreciation towards Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi and the entire Umno-BN machinery in the constituency to ensure that Umno members vote on Sept 9.

"I see the earnest commitment of Johor menteri besar to help Harapan win this time and I thank the menteri besar and the entire Umno leadership at the state, divisional, regional and central levels," he said.

The Simpang Jeram and Pulai by-elections were held following the death of Salahuddin’s passing on July 23, a day after he had undergone surgery for a brain haemorrhage.

Salahuddin was the domestic trade and cost of living minister.

Nazri is contesting against PN’s candidate Dr Mohd Mazri Yahya and independent candidate S Jeganathan in a three-cornered fight.

Salahuddin defended the Simpang Jeram seat in last year’s Johor state election by garnering 8,749 votes against PN's Zarul Salleh (6,350 votes), BN's Lokman Md Don (6,062 votes) and Pejuang's Mahaizal Mahmor (208 votes).

Based on Election Commission statistics, there are 166,653 registered voters, 165,799 ordinary voters, 927 policemen and spouses, and 26 overseas postal voters in the Pulai parliamentary constituency.

Simpang Jeram state constituency has 40,379 registered voters, 40,373 ordinary voters, and six overseas postal voters. - Mkini
