Salary disclosure in job ads can help resolve brain drain, says MP

Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng said with low salaries being offered, it is not surprising why many Malaysian professionals look for jobs elsewhere.

PETALING JAYA: Policies for mandatory salary disclosure in job advertisements should be adopted to help tackle the brain drain problem in Malaysia, says Kepong MP Lim Lip Eng.

The Pakatan Harapan MP said firms that do not disclose salary rates have contributed to the pervasiveness of the “lowballing culture”, where employers provide lower pay for workers despite the professional skills possessed by them.

Lim said the prevalent “lowballing culture” is why it is unsurprising that entry-level engineers are offered a starting pay from RM1,500, while developed countries can provide double the rate.

“With such a low salary offered, it is not surprising that many Malaysian professionals opt to look for jobs in other countries, which worsens the country’s brain drain situation,” he said in a statement.

He said job seekers have the right to know the salary rates of the vacancies advertised, adding that this is already a policy in many developed countries.

His statement came following criticism by the Sarawak Bank Employees’ Union (SBEU) against employers who object to the proposed disclosure of salaries offered in job vacancy advertisements.

Malaysian International Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Christina Tee had said the proposal would “stiffen the market”, while Malaysian Employers Federation president Syed Hussain Syed Husman voiced reservations over the confidentiality of employers’ data.

SBEU accused employers of being “self-serving” by opposing such a policy, as it argued that salary disclosure would enhance competition and promote a free market instead.

Putra Business School’s MBA programme director Ahmed Razman Abdul Latiff had proposed that public and private sector employers disclose the salary rates of jobs on offer to counter exploitation of graduates joining the job market. - FMT
