Umno members reminded not to violate party constitution

Umno today reminded its members that the party takes seriously any disciplinary violation and actions against the party constitution.

Though there was no reference to anyone specific, the statement issued by Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki comes after Rembia assemblyperson Muhammad Jailani Khamis was seen attending the Perikatan Nasional candidate announcement for the Pulai and Simpang Jeram by-elections two days ago.

Asyraf (above) said the party’s disciplinary council is given full power to investigate, review, and take appropriate action on any violations.

“Clause 20.9(f) in the Umno constitution clearly outlines the important principle for every member to ‘maintain the good name and dignity of the party’ and not to do any action, behaviour, writing, or speech that can be interpreted as contradicting this principle.

“The participation of any member in a coalition that Umno is not a part of under any name is also detailed under Clause 20.11 of the Umno constitution,” he said.

Clause 20.11 touches on the actions of Umno assemblypersons and parliamentarians who join “political coalitions Umno is not part of” or who become independent elected representatives.

It also touches on those who contest in elections as independent candidates or “political coalitions” that the party is not a part of.

The membership of any member found to have committed this violation will be terminated automatically.

Yesterday, Jailani defended his actions by saying he did not attend the PN function in his capacity as an Umno assemblyperson.

According to The Star, he said his presence was on behalf of the Muafakat Nasional NGO led by former BN secretary-general Annuar Musa.

Meanwhile, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said he has been informed about the matter and it will be investigated.

Jailani won the Rembia seat in 2018 on the PKR ticket but he left the party in 2020. He later joined Umno before the Malacca state election in 2021.

Asyraf called upon Umno members to stay united and loyal to the party, which is an important component to the federal government. - Mkini
