DAP doesn't have 'free time' like MCA to dwell on past grievances - Loke

DAP neither has the time nor the interest in debating past grievances with MCA, said Anthony Loke.

Taking a swipe at MCA, the DAP secretary-general pointed out that unlike the former, his party is focused on the future.

"We don't have the time to argue about these past grievances with them. They may have more free time, so they continue to talk about these old issues.

"That's the difference between the two parties, one looks at the future, and the other looks at the past. Let the people choose which party represents hope," Loke (above) told reporters after the Negeri Sembilan DAP annual general meeting (AGM) today.

He said this when asked to respond to former MCA youth chief Nicole Wong, who said yesterday that her party should never work with DAP, citing how the latter had always insulted and attacked it.

MCA deputy president Mah Hang Soon agreed with Wong but said cooperation with DAP on specific issues can be considered if the latter agrees with the Chinese party's principles and struggles.

Loke said a party that doesn't talk about the future “is meaningless”.

"Under my leadership, DAP is focused on Malaysia's future."

"The future of Malaysia is ensuring social peace, harmony, defending diversity, minority interests, ensuring economic growth," he added.

‘Collaboration of alliances’

He stressed that DAP understands its tasks, which include ensuring political stability, the effective functioning of the government, implementing good policies, attracting foreign investment, ensuring economic growth, improving people's lives, and focusing on these matters.

Loke added that the basis of cooperation in the unity government is through coalitions such as Pakatan Harapan, BN, GPS and GRS.

"When we formed the government, we didn't form it individually with MCA or Umno. Instead, it was a collaboration of alliances."

MCA’s position

MCA has found itself sidelined after the coalition government was formed - with Umno cosying up to DAP.

MCA president Wee Ka Siong

During MCA's AGM today, party president Wee Ka Siong said that MCA is willing to strike out on its own if its partners in BN continue to seek new alliances.

On Wong's suggestion that the party end cooperation with DAP entirely, Wee replied that MCA would "move forward for the people".

"It depends on the issue, it depends on what it is for," he added.

MCA only has two parliamentarians - Wee, who represents Ayer Hitam and vice-president Wee Jeck Seng, who is the MP for Tanjung Piai.
