Sarawak electricity export to Singapore raised at leaders retreat

The proposed sale of electricity generated in Sarawak to Singapore was raised during a retreat attended by leaders of both countries in the island republic yesterday.

In a statement, Sarawak Premier's Office said the proposal was to supply up to 1,000 MW of power through 700km of sea cables, of which 70 percent will be within Indonesian territorial waters.

Sarawak Premier Abang Johari Openg was among the delegation led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

Currently, Sarawak is already exporting electricity to Sabah and Kalimantan, Indonesia.

The territory is in an aggressive push towards renewable energy, bolstered by its tracts of land and availability of hydropower.

State utility, Sarawak Energy Bhd planned to reduce its share of coal in its power mix to 10 percent by 2030, down from 18 percent currently.

Its two existing coal plants - 210 MW Sejinkat power plant and 270 MW Mukah power plant - are expected to be decommissioned by 2028 and 2030, respectively.

In addition, Sarawak Energy Bhd plans to set up a 50 MW floating solar energy farm in Batang Ai.

However, the state's plan to sell electricity to Singapore does come with risks.

Australian firm Sun Cable, in 2018, proposed a 4,200 km undersea cable project to channel electricity from Australian solar farms to Singapore.

The plan, once fully materialised, was supposed to meet 15 percent of Singapore's electricity needs. The plan is now in limbo as earlier this year, Sun Cable entered voluntary administration due to funding woes. - Mkini
