The English Premier League and English Football League have imposed a ban on the display of Israeli and Palestinian flags at matches held this weekend.
According to a report by The Independent yesterday, the Premier League informed clubs that fans are prohibited from bringing flags into stadiums in order to prevent any potential incidents.
In a show of respect for the victims of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, the British online newspaper reported that players, staff members, and officials will don black armbands.
A moment of silence will also be observed before all games, it reported.
The Premier League’s decision came after consultation with security experts as well as football clubs and is in line with the Football Association’s (FA) approach in banning flags from being shown inside the Wembley stadium during England games.
Meanwhile, several footballers have spoken out over the conflict.
Among them was Liverpool and Egyptian footballer Mohamed Salah.
He was reported by Al-Jazeera as urging for an end to “massacres” in Gaza and for immediate humanitarian aid to be allowed into the Palestinian enclave.
In a video posted on Instagram, he also called on “world leaders to come together to prevent further slaughter of innocent souls. Humanity must prevail.”
