'Massage' post not meant to offend, says AirAsia boss

AirAsia chief executive officer Tony Fernandes has responded to criticism over his LinkedIn post.

This concerned an image of him without a shirt receiving a massage during a meeting in Indonesia.

Fernandes told Malaysiakini that he did not mean to offend with the post which has since been deleted.

"I am sorry if anyone took offence.

"One has to understand the work culture of our airline," he said.

Fernandes (above) said he was feeling tired after three flights.

"It was a mini-management meeting. I was tired and in pain.

"So I asked those present if they would mind if I got a massage and none objected.

"I wanted to show (with the post) that we can multitask but it had been taken out of context," he added.

In the Oct 16 post, Fernandes wrote that it had been "a stressful week".

"Got to love Indonesia and AirAsia culture that I can have a massage and do a management meeting,

"We are making big progress and I have now finalised Capital A structure. Exciting days ahead. Proud of what we have built and never have lost sight of the finish," he added.

The post courted brickbats but there were also those who defended the AirAsia boss.

The controversy also attracted widespread international media attention. - Mkini
