MYAirline probes: Cops to freeze accounts of linked individuals

Police have identified more individuals linked to MYAirline whom they believe can facilitate investigations into the troubled budget carrier, according to Bukit Aman.

Its Commercial Crimes Investigation Department (CCID) director Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said police are also in the process of freezing some 15 bank accounts linked to the individuals and urged them to come forward.

On top of this, he added, investigators have also acquired an extension of remand order against MYAirline co-founder Goh Hwan Hua, who was arrested on Tuesday under anti-money laundering laws.

“Investigations are ongoing and CCID has identified several more individuals who are able to provide statements that can help with the probes.

“It is better for them to come forward and assist the investigations so as to prevent any future complications,” he said in a statement.

According to Ramli, the bank accounts contained some RM5 million in total and belonged to several of the identified persons of interest.

The police earlier this week arrested Goh, who bears the title of “Datuk”, along with his wife and son.

All of them were picked up in Shah Alam and later remanded to facilitate investigations under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001 (Amla).

Police have since released the 57-year-old Goh’s wife and son, while his remand order has been extended for two days until tomorrow.

Authorities are investigating MYAirline and those behind the carrier after the company abruptly announced last week that it was pulling the plug due to financial constraints and advised passengers not to proceed to the airport.

According to the Transport Ministry, approximately 125,000 people, including those who bought flight tickets in advance, were affected by the sudden decision.

The value of ticket sales - booked up to March 2024 - amounted to approximately RM20 million. - Mkini
