PETALING JAYA: A Pakatan Harapan MP has urged the government to provide government clinics suitable equipment to treat minor cases and help reduce congestion in crowded government hospitals.

Noting that government hospitals are currently crowded with many patients, Sungai Petani MP Dr Taufiq Johari said people could go to clinics for early treatment.

“Clinics already have equipment that can provide early treatment to patients, such as X-ray machines and laboratories,” he said when debating the 2024 supply bill in the Dewan Rakyat today.

Taufiq added that the government must accelerate its efforts to implement the suggestions made in the health white paper, starting with the 2024 budget.

He also asked for a portion of the RM300 million allocated in the 2024 budget for maintenance and repairs to university infrastructure to be used to improve facilities for disabled persons.

Taufiq said that according to his observations, disabled facilities in universities were still not up to the standards required to provide facilities to disabled people, senior citizens and pregnant ladies.

“With the additional budget allocated by the government, it is hoped that there will be a more careful approach towards accessibility for vulnerable groups,” he said.

In the 2024 budget, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced that RM300 million will be provided to maintain and repair infrastructure at higher education institutes and replace old equipment, including RM50 million for the procurement of equipment at four Malaysian technical universities. - FMT
