PETALING JAYA: The SMART Tunnel is closed to users to divert flood waters following torrential rain this evening.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), SMART Expressway said the tunnel was closed at 5.40pm to prepare for flood operations. As of 7.10pm, it remained closed.

Meanwhile, it said the case of a vehicle being caught in flood waters on a road leading to the SMART Tunnel had been resolved.

“It was a brief incident and the water has subsided,” it added.

The heavy rain this evening has led to severe traffic congestion in multiple parts of the Klang Valley.

According to Astro Radio Traffic, the traffic congestion is “unusually heavy” on the Maju Expressway (MEX) despite no reports of any accidents in the area.

“Expect an hour-and-a-half delay,” it told commuters.

Accidents reportedly occurred along the Kuala Lumpur Middle Ring Road 2 near the Pantai Cheras Hospital and along the New Klang Valley Expressway from Kota Damansara to Damansara, worsening the rush hour traffic congestion.

Meanwhile, several parts of the city centre were inundated by flash floods, including Jalan Sri Permaisuri, Jalan Peel, Jalan Hang Tuah, and Jalan Kuchai Lama, among others. - FMT
