Thugs attempt to obstruct RTD officers from apprehending overloaded lorries

Two heavy vehicles with 25 pending violations were found to exceed their respective loads by over 80 and 108 percent in Ijok and here yesterday.

SUNGAI BULOH: Two heavy vehicles with 25 pending violations were found to exceed their respective loads by over 80 and 108 percent in Ijok and here yesterday.

The Road Transport Department (RTD), in a statement, said that the lorries were inspected by an enforcement operation team, following complaints received from the public.

"In this enforcement operation, RTD also filed a police report due to the disturbance by a group of unruly lorry drivers who obstructed and attempted to prevent the apprehension of these heavy vehicles.

"The lorry suspected of carrying a load exceeding 80 percent was also found to be driven by a foreign individual and had pending active violation cases," it said via Facebook today.

An inspection at the site of the enforcement operation was also attended by RTD director of enforcement, Datuk Lokman Jamaan.

"RTD will continue to monitor and take stringent action against heavy vehicles, especially those carrying loads exceeding 70 percent.

This figure is categorised as the highest risk in causing technical malfunctions and brake system failures, as well as an increase in fatal accidents and road damage," he said.

He added that the RTD welcomes the public to report cases of overloaded vehicles.

"Companies and commercial vehicle drivers are advised to always comply with the regulations in place to ensure road safety and a safe road environment for other users.

RTD will continue to enforce the laws and regulations under Acts 333, 334, 715, and the Rules thereunder to promote road safety compliance," he said. - NST
