PETALING JAYA: Indonesian president Joko Widodo will be meeting Apple CEO Tim Cook tomorrow to discuss the iPhone maker’s investment opportunities in the republic.
Indonesia’s communication and informatics minister Budi Arie Setiadi said the meeting would augur well for Indonesia as the country was “an important part of the technological advancement ecosystem,” Indonesian news agency Antara reported.
Jokowi, as the president is popularly known, and Cook are expected to meet at the Merdeka Palace.
Separately, Indonesia’s industry minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita expressed hope that potential investment would be discussed during the meeting.
“We have been talking with Apple for a long time. We are talking about a policy, not a specific one, but our policy for Apple,” he was quoted as saying, adding that the said policy revolved around domestic components for Apple products.
Last month, it was reported that Apple and Microsoft had expressed interest in investing in Indonesia, with a focus on human resources development and manufacturing sectors.
Tech In Asia in March quoted Budi as saying that there was a possibility Apple might build a factory in Indonesia.
The technology news website also reported that Apple invested US$44 million in Indonesia in 2017 which was made through the construction of the Apple Academy located in BSD City in the Banten province. - FMT
