JUST A REMINDER

That the Islamic countries, especially in North and Western Africa are in deep stuff.

Here is a story about 80,000 children who are facing starvation in Mali - because of the war and fighting going on between the Muslims there. No one cares. Everyone is more worried that not enough Jews were killed on October 7th 2023.

Armed Groups Besieging Towns In Northeastern Mali Driving Residents, Many Children, To Hunger

“A humanitarian crisis is worsening in northeastern Mali where armed groups linked to Islamic State have besieged major towns leaving residents including some 80,000 children vulnerable to malnutrition, locals and an aid group warned Wednesday.

The town of Ménaka has been under siege for four months, driving up the prices of food. Other essential goods like medication are increasingly hard to find, residents and aid groups say.

“The humanitarian situation is catastrophic, with displaced people going from house to house asking for food for their families. Children are threatened with starvation,” Wani Ould Hamadi, deputy mayor of the town of Ménaka, told the Associated Press.

Mali, along with its neighbors Burkina Faso and Niger, has for over a decade battled an insurgency fought by armed groups, including some allied with al-Qaida and the Islamic State group.

Following military coups in all three nations in recent years, the ruling juntas have expelled French forces and turned to Russia’s mercenary units for security assistance instead.”

My Comments :

So Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso are all screwed up. By the way (for those of you who know the English language) Timbuktu is in Mali. In the map above you can also see a country called Mauritania which borders Mali to the West. It is also pretty screwed up.

But over 100 years ago the famous British shipping company the Cunard Line built and operated the world's largest and fastest passenger liner called the RMS Mauretania (and its sister ship the Lusitania). Here is a picture. Those were the days of style and class.

In those days there was no air travel between Britain and North America. So they built these very large (790 feet, 44,000 tons), very luxurious and super fast ships which sailed between Southampton or Liverpool in England and New York. These were the Boeing 747s of the age. The Mauritania could sail at 25 knots (46 km/hr). In those days these super liners vied for the Blue Riband prize ie the fastest crossing of the Atlantic Ocean between New York and Liverpool or Southampton.

In June 1909 it made the Atlantic crossing in four days, 17 hours, and 21 minutes. This was the fastest time ever recorded, and the Mauretania was awarded the Blue Riband prize. This record stood for 20 years.

So 115 years ago the name Mauretania reflected something good and useful for the human race.
