Local restaurant apologises for 'type C' comment, welcomes all races

Local fast food restaurant Darsa Fried Chicken has apologised for a comment on social media, which courted brickbats from internet users who accused it of playing the racial card.

In a statement this evening, the restaurant, which describes itself as “100 percent bumiputera-owned”, called the comment an “unintentional mistake”.

“Perhaps the slew of comments affected the focus of our (page) administrator,” it added.

The restaurant, which opened its first outlet on April 29, said it has decided not to respond to other issues apart from those regarding its operations to prevent a similar mistake from recurring.

“We welcome all customers regardless of race and religion. May the Malaysia we love remain peaceful,” it added.

The restaurant, which is touted as an alternative to KFC, came under fire over its response to those who pointed out that its prices appeared to be steep.

Darsa Fried Chicken, among others, cautioned against being “duped by the negative sentiments played up by type C”, which social media users believed referred to Chinese Malaysians.

The response also left Rawang assemblyperson Chua Wei Keat, who was contemplating sampling the fried chicken, befuddled.

In a Facebook post, the PKR politician said he was thinking about visiting the restaurant because it is located close to Rawang and to support a local business.

“But now, the question of ‘type C’ has arisen. What is the meaning of ‘type C’?” he asked.

One Facebook user replied that when a business hoped to leverage racial sentiments, it would not survive in Malaysia or elsewhere, while another called for a boycott.

On a lighter note, there were also those who quipped that “type C” referred to the USB cable.

KFC was among several businesses which have been the target of a boycott over the conflict in Gaza.

Two days before Darsa Fried Chicken opened its doors, more than 100 KFC outlets nationwide were temporarily closed. - Mkini
