Umno axes former Senate deputy president who joined Bersatu

Umno has stripped the membership of former Senate deputy president Mohamad Ali Mohamad who was found to have joined Bersatu.

The decision to dismiss the former Tangga Batu Umno chief was made at an Umno supreme council meeting chaired by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi last Friday.

“The meeting last Friday confirmed the dismissal of Mohamad Ali who was found to have joined Bersatu.

“Mohamad Ali is the former head of Umno Tangga Batu. Based on the party’s constitution, any individual who joins another party will lose his membership after it has been verified by the meeting.

“The Umno supreme council has confirmed the cancellation of the membership,” said a supreme council member who declined to be named.

On April 28, Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the party would discuss Mohamad Ali’s position after the former Malacca Umno deputy chairperson presented an Umno supreme council meeting with his Bersatu registration form.

Asyraf said the matter will be discussed with the Umno president following an official complaint received from Tangga Batu Umno. Tangga Batu is a federal constituency in Malacca.

He said, through the complaint, the division also submitted some evidence that Mohamad Ali (above) was already a member of Bersatu.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Ali when contacted said he has not received any letter from Umno regarding his dismissal.

“Not yet (received any dismissal letter),” he told Malaysiakini.

Asked if he would submit an appeal if it was true that he had been sacked by Umno, he said he would announce his decision when the time is right.

“I will inform later at the right time,” he said.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Ali in a post on Facebook claimed Umno’s decision to fire him was expected.

However, he said, it is not an obstacle or an end to his struggle to uplift the Malays.

“I have expected this decision. This is not the end for me to fight for the fate of the Malay people, defend Islam, and raise the dignity of the country.

“These are ordinary things in politics and part of political norms. The struggle will definitely continue, I am sure I am not alone in this struggle,” he wrote on Facebook. - Mkini
