Ex-HR minister Sivakumar to contest DAP polls

Free Malaysia Today
V Sivakumar, a former federal minister, joined DAP in 1997 and won his first election in 2008.

PETALING JAYA
Three-term Batu Gajah MP V Sivakumar will run for re-election to DAP’s 30-member central executive committee (CEC) at the party elections next month.

The former human resources minister confirmed this with FMT, saying he had been nominated to contest the DAP polls.

Sivakumar, who was dropped from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s Cabinet in December 2023, joined DAP in 1997. He won his first election in 2008, becoming the Tronoh assemblyman.

The DAP deputy secretary-general was elected as Batu Gajah MP in 2013 and defended the seat in the 2018 and 2022 general elections.

There has been speculation over whether other DAP veterans will contest this year’s CEC polls following the withdrawal of four party stalwarts.

They are current DAP adviser Tan Kok Wai, treasurer Fong Kui Lun, vice-chairman M Kulasegaran, and former Penang executive councillor Phee Boon Poh.

The four senior DAP members had said that they wanted to make way for a new generation of leaders in the CEC.

DAP vice-chairman and six-term Seputeh MP Teresa Kok said she would be vying for a spot on the CEC as she did not consider herself a senior party member yet. - FMT
